The Roseland Tavern Drawn PairsOn Sunday, Gisborne Club Darts Association members gathered at the Roseland Tavern for the Drawn Pairs Association Trophy.

This is a unique tournament where the pairings are given a handicap dependent on their make-up: two men = 601, two women = 501, one woman/one man = 551.

A section-play round-robin was held to determine who made the main round and the consolation.

The two-life main round was dominated by two pairings: Mike Jones, from the Roseland Tavern, and John Love, the new captain of the Cossie Shakers; and Cris Kiri, of 2NZEF Titans, and Rowe Mason, of 2NZEF Bulls.

Both semifinals were enjoyable to watch, as arrows were dispatched with accuracy all day. However, the latter pairing would not be denied victory as they secured the title with both lives intact.

The consolation trophy was also a torrid affair. It came down to a final between the Roseland Dilligaf pairing of Heiwari Phillips/Sonny Laulau and Roseland Tavern stalwart Wayne Morrell and the youngest of the young, Ihaka Wynyard-Kaio, of 2NZEF Titans. The latter team took the honours.

Congratulations to all those members who supported, organised and ran this happy-go-lucky tournament, especially the Roseland Tavern players. It was fun. A special thanks to Gordie and his staff for the hospitality and the unforgettable barbecue lunch.

Tuesday night round-upThe 2NZEF Club hosted a full complement of teams with some enterprising and surprise outcomes.

Ihaka Wynyard-Kaio turned heads when his name was called for scores of 180 and 123 finish during his team’s encounter with 2NZ Say My Name Again.

2NZEF McCannics put up some stiff competition when they clashed with hosts 2NZEF Bullz. The most recent Bullz recruit, Morris MacDonald, continues to draw commentaries from his teammates. These seem to bring out the best in him. We are constantly reminded of his match-winning anchor-man performance against the Cossy Shakers last week. It’s always hard to find a good anchor-man.

Tutu bade farewell to the Roseland Dilligaf players who were being hosted by 2NZ (3). It was 10pm, and I was heading home and they were just starting the singles. Some teams do work long hours!

COMING UPSet pairs — Sunday, June 10 — Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club: check in by 10am. Start at 10.30am. Entry fee $5 — members.
