Team Charlie Ngatai player Maia Campbell is pictured above on his way to the tryline in week 1 of the inaugural Gisborne Boys' High School Courage Cup 15 years and under rugby competition yesterday.

The cup, held at the Rectory fields, featured three superb games involving teams named after former GBHS players who went on to forge successful professional careers.

Team Charlie Ngatai claimed a 34-29 victory over Team Brendon O'Connor, Team Hosea Gear beat Team Toa Halafihi 41-17 and Team Whetu Douglas, who were drawn as the first holders of the Courage Cup, were classy in a 31-24 win over Team Rico Gear.

The games were well-controlled by referees Miah Nikora, Kahu Tamatea and Aaron Brown.

Mark Jefferson, who with his fellow coaches organises the competition, said they were rapt with how the opening week went.

“It was great to see kids out there playing and enjoying their rugby. We got a positive response from players and supporters alike.”
