Gisborne Girls’ High School senior A produced a strong performance last night in the Gisborne YMCA to recaim inter-school “bragging rights”, when they soundly defeated Ritana senior A from Lytton.

Girls’ High won the Pak’nSave premier grade clash 50-39, and they led all the way.

The quarter scores show how dominant they became: 14-11, 30-18 and 43-25.

“It was an even first quarter with some good competition in all positions,” said netball commentator Sherrill Beale.

“However, in the second quarter Girls’ High stepped up their pressure and Ritana made a few basic errors.

“Girls’ High capitalised on the turnovers, pulled ahead by 12 at half time and they never looked back.”

Beale said Girls’ High stayed with the same team through the whole game.

“Ritana made changes at each quarter and outscored Girls’ High by 14-7 in the last quarter. But the score had already blown out by then.”

Beale said Girls’ High circle defenders Caitlin Bregman and Gabriell Wainohu combined well and pressured Ritana’s shooters at every opportunity.

“Both players were out hunting for the ball and Caitlin was successful in stopping many of the high lobs into the shooters.

“Wing defence Caitlyn Huhu worked hard and helped in linking both ends.”

Beale said Girls’ High midcourters Hannah Veitch and Aarika-Rahera Ruru continued to work well together.

“They delivered good passes into shooters Te Oriwa Tuipolotu and Peyton Riri.”

Girls’ High coach Irene Takao said she was really pleased with three quarters of her team’s performance.

“I think the girls took their foot off the pedal in the final quarter, but they were able to maintain a winning margin.

“For three quarters of the match they played fantastically,” Takao said.

“The energy was there and they commanded every one of those three quarters.”

Ritana senior A won against Girls’ High last time out in grading.

Last night Girls’ High well and truly reversed the ledger.

The other match was a thriller, with just one goal in it.

Whangara Old Girls held on to beat Champers Horouta Gold 42-41.

It was 11-10 to Whangara after 15 minutes, 18-18 at half time and 29-28 to Whangara at three-quarter time.

“A closely contested game for the full hour and the win could have gone either way,” Beale said.

“The evenness showed at the start of the second quarter when it took three-and-a-half minutes for either one of the teams to score a goal.”

Beale said both coaches made changes, but neither team could pull away.

“Netball takes a break this weekend, though in the primary netball the Future Ferns still have their skills programmes today and tomorrow.”
