The T20 Challenge Cup is a real test of young cricketers' skill, will and resourcefulness.

Gisborne Boys' High School sides, the Blues and Royals and the Admiralty, proved that at Nelson Park yesterday.

On Nelson Park's artificial pitches, the Blues beat a Tairawhiti Women's Cricket Club team led by Northern Spirit seamer Kayley Knight by 41 runs, and the Admiralty beat a capable Campion College crew by three wickets.

Campion captain Hamish Swann won the coin-toss, opting to bat first against the Admiralty. Wicketkeeper-batsman Daniel Baillie (22) has demonstrated the ability to bat good time and deal with the bad ball: he led Campion's scorers from No.1 in Week 2 of the nine-a-side competition, their next-best being all-rounder Connor Starck (21, coming in at No.6). The college was dismissed for 93 in 17 overs, their largest partnership being a third wicket-stand of 28 between Baillie and second-drop Gagandeep Singh (13).

Gisborne Boys' best bowlers were leg-spinner Jett Whitaker (3-13), pace-bowling captain Bekko Page (2-14 in four overs) and Year 9 seamer Ben Langford (2-24). Whitaker and Langford both bowled two overs; talented left-arm orthodox spinner Riker Rolls conjured up a T20 maiden over, costing only eight runs in four overs.

The Admiralty ran Campion's score down in 13.5 overs: hard-hitting No.3 CricHQ Most Valuable Player Gareth Langford struck two 6s and seven 4s in a 40-ball innings of 57, in 38 minutes of mayhem for those bowlers who dropped short on the pitch. His younger brother Ben, who carried his bat for 18, is a good off-side player. The college's medium-pacer Taye McGuinness (1-2 in two overs) bowled a superb line before and after taking the wicket of GBHS No.1 Page (4). Aiden Armstrong (1-7 from 1.5 overs) was Campion's only other wicket-taker but played the shot of the match, a great square cut for 4 off the new ball versus speedster Nathaniel Fearnley.

Budding leggie Whitaker — like Dylan Worsnop of the Blues and Royals — is a keen, dedicated cricketer. Worsnop took 3-18 against the TWCC, ran Helen Evans out for 4 and held two catches (a caught-and-bowled to dismiss Grace Kuil — the Poverty Bay Cricket Association's Most Promising All-rounder in last year's Junior Colts League — for 10).

Worsnop's one-handed reflex catch at short cover to account for Elenor Walsh (3) off the bowling of her fellow leftie Kavidu Withanage (2-21 from four overs), ended the contest.

The match between the Admiralty and the TWCC began with Jarrod Ormiston, captain of the former, winning the toss. He chose to bat, and the left-handed skipper led by example by making 32 from 38. He shared a 65-run opening stand with Akira Makiri (16), whose twin Keanu made an excellent, unbeaten 24 off 26 from No.6. The Admiralty batted to term for 149-4. They fronted up to 18-year-old Y13 Knight (1-7 in four overs, including two maiden overs) with the new ball, leftie Walsh, the tall Kuil and Northern Districts under 15 representative Grace Levy (1-18 off 4).

CricHQ MVP Knight top-scored in the game with 46 off 40 balls, including six boundaries, and shared a 35-run stand with first-drop Jess Hayward (7). The TWCC were bowled out for 101 in 18 overs.

Ormiston said: “I thought we made a great match-effort in batting out our 20 overs. We bowled tightly and we fielded well too.”
