A WOMEN'S football game ended early after an ankle break landed a Bohemians player in Gisborne Hospital’s emergency department on Sunday.

Bohemians were trailing Gisborne Girls’ High School 6-0 when Jade Moore fell after a tackle and cracked her ankle.

Bohemians coach Graham Maclean said the tackle was clean; Moore just landed on a terrible angle.

“She got seriously hurt and ended up in hospital,” he said.

“I would like to say thank you to Dylan Babbington, who called the game off after Jade fell with five minutes to go. He stayed after the game, too, until she was taken to hospital.”

Teammate Tami Gooch said this week had been rough for Moore but she had dealt with it well.

Doctors had manipulated her ankle to put a cast on it, and tomorrow she was due to have a plate and pins put in.

Elsewhere in women’s football, Marist beat Lytton High School 3-2.

Long-time Marist goalie Pip Thomson said Kenzie Holmes, Chelsea Simpson, Sarah Homer and recently returned Stevie Clarke played well for Marist.

They covered a lot of ground and Clarke, playing at the back, matched the speed of the Lytton strikers.

Thomson said Lytton played a fast game, which left Marist struggling at times, but she felt that ultimately they deserved the win.

“Plenty of shots were saved, or went over the top.”

Of the Marist shots that did go in, two came from Simpson, with Kerry Tomlinson scoring their other goal.

Gisborne United beat Campion College 2-1. Gisborne Laundry Services Thistle had the bye.

After the end of Round 1, Thistle sit at the top of the table with 18 points, followed by Marist (15pts), GGHS (12), United (10), LHS (9), Campion (7) and Bohemians (0).
