Disabled tamariki and rangatahi (children and young people) will benefit from a new $3.6 million fund launched by Sport NZ this week.

The fund, to be invested over three years, is to support initiatives and programmes that increase opportunities and create a more inclusive environment for disabled participants, with a focus on intellectual and invisible impairments.

It is open to national and regional organisations with experience in using play, active recreation and sport to engage disabled tamariki and rangatahi. It is also open to those wishing to explore new opportunities in the field.

Sport NZ diversity and inclusion manager Rebecca Rolls said it was important that disabled youth had better access to physical activity, and Sport NZ aimed to achieve that through this investment.

The Disability Inclusion fund built on enhanced investment by Sport NZ to Parafeds, D-Sport and seven National Disability Sport Organisations. It was another step in the delivery on commitments in the Sport NZ 2019 Disability Action Plan.

“We want to see everyone developing inclusive experiences so more disabled people can enjoy being active,” Rolls said.

Applicant organisations have to show how they can make sustainable changes within their networks to benefit children and young people. They can apply, individually or collectively, for single or multi-year funding up to a maximum amount of $100,000 a year.
