HOCKEY by Murray Robertson

The higher-ranked teams delivered the goods against their lower-ranked opponents in senior hockey last weekend.

In the men’s league, THC beat YMP B 11-1, and YMP A beat Gisborne Boys’ High School 7-0.

In the women’s competition, YMP A beat Gisborne Girls’ High School 9-2.

Chris Fox and Hylam Tukariri each scored four goals for THC.

“The result shows where THC are at in the men’s competition,” hockey commentator Tony Scragg said.

“They were just too classy for the second YMP team.”

Courtney Onekawa was the chief destroyer in YMP A’s win against Amber Dental Girls’ High.

“Girls’ High started well again but a second-half blitz by YMP took the game away from them,” Scragg said.

“Courtney scored five goals, and when she is racking up the goals the whole side is tracking along nicely.”

GMC Green and JNL Paikea had a good go at each other, but the Green Machine’s class showed through and they won 6-2.

Paikea scored first, Green responded, Paikea scored again and Green hit back.

“After that, the Green Machine piled on the goals, but I hear it was Paikea’s best performance of the season to date,” Scragg said.

GMC Kowhai beat GMC Gold 6-1, and Megan Allen scored a hat-trick.

“Kowhai are undefeated in the bottom-four women’s competition,” Scragg said.

They had set the benchmark in this division, he said.

YMP B were too good for Te Aowera and won their match 4-0.

“Te Aowera were unable to score back-to-back wins, but 4-0 against YMP B is respectable,” Scragg said.

Men’s team YMP A thumped Gisborne Boys’ High 7-0.

“YMP were short of a couple of key players but that didn’t stop them producing a strong performance,” Scragg said.

“They have LOB A and THC to come, and last weekend’s outing showed some good signs for those matches.”

In arguably the best match of the weekend, Lytton Old Boys A and LOB B fought out an eight-goal affair that the top team were happy, if not relieved, to win. LOB A won 5-3.

“The top Lytton team failed to take full advantage of their scoring opportunities, and the B team just about stole it,” Scragg said.

“No doubt there will be some hard training in the A team this week ahead of their clash with YMP A this weekend.”
