BOWLS By Crackerjack

GLENYS Whiteman and Ray Young won the first centre event of the Bowls Gisborne East-Coast season, the Diane Bruce Memorial Trophy 2-4-2 Centre Open Mixed Pairs, last weekend.

An entry of 24 teams contested the tourney, held at Kahutia Bowling Club.

Eleven teams from Gisborne Bowling Club, five from the Poverty Bay club, five from Kahutia and three from Te Karaka took part.

The pairs played three games of 2-4-2 lasting 12 ends or two hours and 15 minutes, whichever came first. The top 16 went through to post-section play on Sunday with single elimination.

After the first round of post-section play on Sunday, the top eight teams went on to the quarterfinal. In that round, Steve and Kay Goldsbury beat July Hoepo and Diane Murray 12-3.

Junior husband-and-wife duo Geoff and Karen Pinn had an exciting game against David File and Jasmine Merrick. The Pinns led 11-8 before their more experienced opponents hauled them in and won 15-11.

Boon McIlroy and Donna Smith also had a good game against Kahutia’s Glenys Whiteman and Ray Young but lost 19-8.

Charlie Ure and Dianne Phillips had a 22-5 win against Poverty Bay’s Ngawai Turipa and Bruce Gledhill.

In the semifinal, the Goldsbury pair beat File and Merrick 15-8, while Whiteman and Young beat Ure and Phillips 9-5.

In the final round, Whiteman and Young led 12-7 on the 10th end.

Steve and Kay Goldsbury then held five shots but Young took a couple of the shots out, leaving the Goldsbury pair still behind, 12-10.

On the last end, Whiteman held one shot and Kay Goldsbury took the shot. However, Steve Goldsbury’s last bowl took out Kay’s shot, which gave the Whiteman pair the shot for the end. Whiteman decided not to send down her last bowl, and she and Young were 13-10 winners.

They won the Diane Bruce Memorial Trophy and also a centre title. This was Whiteman’s 71st centre title.

In the final round of the plate, siblings Leighton and Lucy Shanks played some brilliant bowls to beat Gisborne husband-and-wife duo Tim and Ginny Sherriff 16-3.

Bruce Ball and Betty Herring, of Poverty Bay, won the consolation with three wins and a plus-19 differential. Don and Diane Oates, of Gisborne, were the runners-up with two wins.
