BOWLS by Crackerjack

FOUR players won their first centre titles when the Bowls Gisborne East Coast centre champion of champions triples titles for junior women and men were decided at Kahutia Bowling Club.

Libby Clay (skip), Karen Pinn (director) and Nanette Treloar (lead), of the Gisborne Bowling Club, won the women’s competition, and it was a first centre title for each of them.

The Tolaga Bay team of Ben Elkington (s), George Tamihana (d) and Hone Burema (l) won the men’s competition, and it was a first centre title for Tamihana.

Only three clubs entered the junior women’s event and four, the junior men’s event. That meant the junior round robin games were completed on the Saturday.

In the junior women’s first round, Clay, Pinn and Treloar had a 19-15 victory over Diane Tamanui-Murray (s), Erica Thompson (d) and Barbara Tuhi (l) of Te Karaka.

Gisborne had led 19-11 with one end to go and Te Karaka fought back to take four shots on the last end to halve the margin.

Robyn Arthur (s), Norma Miller (d) and Win Baker (l), of the Poverty Bay club, had the bye first up. They faced Te Karaka in the second round while Gisborne had the bye. Poverty Bay started well but Te Karaka stormed back with some great bowls to win 31-9.

Te Karaka had the bye in the third round and, although they had only one win for two points with a plus-18 differential, they had a chance to win the tournament on differential if all three teams had one win.

Poverty Bay had a good start against Gisborne but Clay, Pinn and Treloar combined well to overhaul Arthur’s team and build a solid lead.

After winning four shots on the 17th end, Gisborne led 25-12. On the last end, Pinn had two bowls next to the jack. Arthur tried to knock the bowls away but her shots missed the target and Clay’s Gisborne team won the game 27-12 to claim the junior women’s champion of champions triples. They had two wins, four points and and a plus-19 differential.

In the junior men’s first round, Andrew Ball (s), Dusty Miller (d) and Otto Louw (l), of Poverty Bay, beat the Kahutia team of William Murray (s), Marty Ryan (d) and Ray Young (l) 18-11.

Tolaga Bay’s Elkington, Tamihana and Burema had a 20-8 victory over 10-year-old twin brothers Kyle and Liam Pinn and their father Geoff Pinn (skip) of the Gisborne club.

Poverty Bay beat Gisborne 30-5 in the second round but lost 25-7 to Tolaga Bay.

Andrew Ball played some brilliant bowls throughout the weekend. Poverty Bay finished in second place with two wins, four points and a plus-32 differential.

Gisborne had a good game in the third round but the more seasoned players of Kahutia ended up winning 24-13. The youngsters deserve credit for their efforts against more experienced players in this tournament.
