THE Brezz’n Falcons team of Simon Koia, Harley Ngarangione, Sam Kirikino and Peter Tom won the Gisborne Club Darts Rose Bowl A-Grade competition at the Gisborne RSA last Sunday.

After the ultimate graded Tuesday-night trophies, the Rose Bowl is the next most sought-after team title on the local council darts calendar.

Such was the attendance (21 teams of four) and dedication, the tournament started at 10am and did not finish until the final gold-deciding A-Grade arrow was unleashed at 9pm.

The Rose Bowl is a second-chance event that opens the door for teams who are out of the running for top Tuesday-night honours to grab gold. This year’s A-Grade results achieved just that.

With only one game remaining in Tuesday’s A-Grade competition and sitting in fourth spot, the awesome foursome of the Falcons — Koia, Ngarangione, Kirikino and Tom — overcame the challenge from the RSA Rippers (1) team of Tom Irwin, Winston Wanoa, Mike Hughes and Matiu Hawea.

The Falcons survived attack after attack from the three teams situated above them on the A-grade table — 2NZ Rebels (first), Brezz’n Tigers (second) and RSA Liquorland (third) to merit a place in finals position.

A similar result did not eventuate in the B Grade as Brezz’n Done&Dusted (1) — captained by Brian Leach and including Wayne Tamihana, Marcus Leach and Karlia Waikawa — repulsed more than one challenge from the 2NZ Maverick (1) four of Cris Kiri, Joe Kiri, Jojo Kiri and Hayden Kiri.

This achievement by Done&Dusted means their players will collect gold on both fronts.

The same went for the C Grade, where Brezz’n Pythons, Kazius Collier-Delamere, Kiri Hawea, Louise Laulau and Joanne Matete, already in line for Tuesday night gold, defeated the all-girl quartet of Ora Pohio-Taukamo, Syndi Barbarich, Pauline Haapu and Heni Pewhairangi.

Emphasising the high quality and talent on show, 19 maximum 180 scores were thrown: Tom Irwin (4) RSA Right Track; Brian Leach (3) Brezz’n Done&Dusted Simon Koia (2) Brezz’n Falcons; Tahuna Irwin (2) RSA Right Track; Marcus Leach (1) Brezz’n Done&Dusted Vern Marshall (1) RSA Liquorland; Steve Nisbett (1) RSA Liquorland; Ora Taukamo-Pohio (1) 2NZ (3); George Vaotuua (1) RSA Liquorland; Karlia Waikawa (1) Brezz’n Done&Dusted Winston Wanoa (1) RSA Right Track; Allen Wildbore (1) Cossie (4).

The winners and runners-up are to be congratulated, but simply being present in the cauldron of a hundred dart players wishing each other the best before the start of play was in itself something to appreciate.

Then watching great darts and experiencing the games unfold over the next 10 hours of play added up to an experience that turned what might have been a good day into a really great day.

Every player and support person should be congratulated.

Special thanks go to tournament organiser Aunty Mary Hollis for making the tournament run smoothly.
