EASTLAND had some close matches on Day 2 of the junior badminton nationals in Palmerston North.

Competing in Division 3, Eastland lost to Manawatu (2) 10-6 and to Taranaki 15-1.

Against Manawatu, it was 4-4 after the doubles. Manawatu dominated the singles, winning six of the eight matches, and Eastland rallied to win two of the four mixed doubles. Close games were a feature of the tie.

Taranaki dominated against Eastland, winning 15 matches of the 16 matches.

Lily Hill and Wellington player Anaiwan Ojala were able to hold off their opponents and win by two points in both games.

Manaia Puha and Journey Waru lost their first game by 10 points but fought back in the second to lose by only two.

Boys’ doubles: Pedley/Noramin lost to Eang/Puha 15-21, 17-21; Stretch/Fox lost to Kingston/Ojala 15-21, 14-21.

Girls’ doubles: Ma/Ututaonga def Habib/Waru 21-9, 21-16; Gowland-Tichbon/Robins def Elliment/Hill 21-10, 21-15.

Boys’ singles: Pedley def Eang 21-15, 22-20; Noramin def Puha 21-19, 19-21, 21-7; Stretch lost to Ojala 21-23, 18-21; Savill lost to Kingston 9-21, 22-24.

Girls’ singles: Ma def Habib 21-19, 21-9; Gowland-Tichbon def Waru 21-16, 18-21, 21-9; Robins def Hill 16-21 21-9, 21-11; Hyde def Elliment 21-10, 21-14.

Mixed doubles: Pedley/Ma lost to Eang/Habib 21-19, 9-21, 19-21; Noramin/Ututaonga def Puha/Waru 21-13, 21-7; Stretch/Robins def Ojala/Hill 22-20, 21-11; Savill/Gowland-Tichbon lost to Kingston/Elliment 19-21, 19-21.
