SOFTBALL

A CLOSE loss and a close win — Uawa women softballers had a dramatic afternoon at Waikirikiri Park on Saturday.

They had a double-header in the Tairawhiti club competition and, against a determined Whatatutu outfit first up, they were pipped 6-5.

The second game for Uawa was against Rovers and just the one run separated the two teams in this game as well.

This time, Uawa got up for a 9-8 win.

Rangatahi United, a new team led by Taiwhakaea Osborne, took on Scorpion and though the youngsters from Gisborne Intermediate fought hard, Scorpion won 12-2.

In the men’s competition, TWK Rams and Gisborne Boys’ High School fought out a nail-biting 2-2 draw.

Both teams’ pitchers worked hard but the batters took advantage of fielding errors.

Jessie O’Keefe stood out for Boys’ High and Xayvier Kingi was strong for TWK.

Rovers were too good for a new-look Uawa team on Friday night, winning 10-0.
