TWO first-half goals by skipper Lizzie Hall set table-toppers Riverina on the road to victory over Gisborne Girls' High School in women's football on Sunday.
Grace Levy added another goal in the second half for a 3-0 win that gaive Riverina their 10th consecutive win and kept them six pointsahead of second-placed Gisborne United, who beat Bohemians 8-0. Both games were at Harry Barker Reserve.
Gisborne United have a game in hand and are the only team with a realistic chance of catching Riverina.
Gisborne Laundry Services Riverina have the maximum 30 points from 10 games. Heavy Equipment Services United have 24 from nine, and the best of the rest are Campion College, with 14 from nine. Bohemians have nine points, Gisborne Girls' High five and Tatapouri Marist Thistle three.
United were quick to stamp their authority on the game against Bohemians, scoring four goals in the first 25 minutes — two from Chelsea Simpson and two from Claire Bayliss. Kayley Knight added another in the 39th minute for a halftime score of 5-0.
Tessa McDonald, Sarah Graham and Simpson — completing her hat-trick — scored second-half goals for the 8-0 win.
Bohemians fought hard throughout but United's close-passing game cut through the defence time and again.
Campion looked confident in their 5-0 win against a depleted Marist Thistle side. Goals from Miah Somerton, Elizabeth Briant and Sofia Zame gave the students a 3-0 halftime lead on their home ground.
Zame and Lucy Allan completed the scoring in the second half.
The big game this Sunday is the top-of-the-table clash between Riverina and United at Harry Barker Reserve. Campion play Bohemians at Anzac Park. Both games start at 10.30am. The Girls' High-Marist Thistle game has been postponed.
