Poverty Bay-East Coast planned on giving their opponents more than just a fright as the Freyberg Masters national interprovincial teed off on Halloween at Motueka today.

PBEC started a physically and mentally demanding week-long teams' matchplay tournament against Southland this morning on the picturesque Motueka course.

The six-strong squad flying the PBEC flag at the over-40s event are Anaru Reedy, Dwayne Russell, Tony Akroyd, Pete Bremner, David Solomann and Jace Brown (reserve).

Going into this morning's opener, PBEC faced a schedule of eight clashes over five days.

Following the Southland tie this morning, they were up against Auckland in the afternoon.

Tomorrow they play Waikato and Tasman, followed by Northland on Wednesday, North Harbour and Bay of Plenty on Thursday, and Taranaki in their final tie on Friday afternoon.

PBEC go in as bottom seeds after placing 15th and last in the 2021 Freyberg Masters including a team win over Taranaki.
