GISBORNE surf lifesaver Chris Dawson won silver in the pool for the New Zealand Black Fins at the Lifesaving World Championships at Riccione in Italy overnight.

Dawson, from Dawson Building Midway Surf Life Saving Club, won his medal in the open men's 50 metres manikin carry.

He was just beaten for the gold medal by an Australian lifeguard, finishing just 0.29 of a second behind.

Dawson's team were fifth in the men's 4x25m manikin tow final.

Dawson was fourth in the men's 200m supersaver race, and he and clubmate Cory Taylor were in the Black Fins team who finished seventh in the men's 4x50m medley relay final.

Midway's Olivia Corrin was in a team who finished seventh in the open women's 4x25m manikin tow final.

For the Junior Black Fins, the highlight on Day 2 on the beach was the first-equal gold medal finish for Mt Maunganui's Jayden Murphy with a South African lifeguard in the men's ski final.

Lachie Falloon, from Kaiaponi Farms Waikanae, was fifth in that final.

Summer Rolston, from Waikanae, was part of the Kiwi team who won silver in the women's tube rescue, and she got a bronze in the women's ocean (taplin) relay.

Beach sprint winner from Tuesday, Oska Smith, from Waikanae, medalled again. He was part of the Junior Black Fins team who took silver in the men's ocean (taplin) relay.

Points update after Day 2:

Open: Australia 324, 1; Italy 283, 2; New Zealand, 258, 3: France 252, 4.

Youth: Australia 373.5, 1; South Africa 312.5, 2; New Zealand 306.5, 3; France 249, 4.
