It takes a lot to stop Poverty Bay Cricket.

But the club finals of both the premier-grade and Senior B competitions, which were to have been played at Harry Barker Reserve tomorrow, have been abandoned because of the rain this week.

Both the reserve and Poverty Bay Cricket’s alternative venue, Nelson Park, were closed by Recreational Services on behalf of Gisborne District Council.

Skipper Carl Shaw’s Bollywood Stars High School Old Boys won all five games and qualified first for the 50-over DJ Barry Cup final and so have won that trophy.

HSOB had previously won four out of six games in the 40-over Doleman Cup before beating the Nick Greeks-led Coastal Concrete OBR side by nine wickets in that competition’s final before Christmas.

Rawhiti Legal OBR won the season-long Hope Cup Senior B competition. In the 2 v 3 semifinal they beat Horouta Te Waka. In the 1 v 4 semifinal, Bollywood Stars HSOB Presidents beat Civil Project Solutions Ngatapa Green Caps. As OBR had a higher seeding (3) than Presidents (4) going into the semis, OBR were named competition winners.

In between the premier grade’s Doleman and DJ Barry cup competitions, the gutsy Galaxy World Gisborne Boys’ High School first 11, captained by Nathan Trowell, won all four of their T20 matches to win the Walker Shield over two weekends, after fighting hard to place sixth at the Super 8 schools’ tournament in Gisborne.

Siteworx Civil Horouta skipper David Situ saw Te Waka put up the premier grade’s best individual and team batting performance, and the biggest winning margin of the year in their 275-run win against OBR on March 5.

Poverty Bay Cricket Association’s senior prize-giving will be held at the Harry Barker Reserve pavilion at 7.30pm tomorrow night, while junior prize-giving is scheduled to be held on Friday, April 1.

Poverty Bay director of cricket David Castle, at the end of his first summer in the role, said: “It’s been a good season. We’ve had some great individual and team performances across both the senior and junior grades and competitions, but we can always streamline things and improve.

“We will certainly look to get a Poverty Bay team into the Basil McBurney second 11 competition next season, and go from there.”
