Tomorrow's fixtures in the two local competitions — the premier grade's DJ Barry Cup and Senior B's Hope Cup — have been cancelled by Poverty Bay Cricket Association.
“We aimed to get the season back under way this weekend but dueto poor weather conditions, neither the Harry Barker Reserve or Nelson Park could be prepared for play,” Poverty Bay development officer and competitions administrator Josiah Turner said.
“For health and safety reasons — having received feedback from our clubs — this is our decision. We look forward to next week with hopes of better weather.”
Turner said the PBCA committee would decide whether the fixtures for Round 1 of the reinstated two-day format in the DJ Barry Cup and Round 9 of the Hope Cup were replayed later.
The prospect of two-day cricket's return could see an elevated cricket standard and greater keenness for “timed” cricket.
The loss of this longer form of the game — for an emphasis on T20, 40 and even 30-over cricket — was regretted by some at the time but news of its reinstatement has been popular.
