Poverty BayThirty players took part in the RSA (women’s section) optional triples tournament on the Poverty Bay club’s green on Friday, March 15.

Allan Cameron, representing the RSA, spoke to the gathering before play.

The winners were Jan Powell, John Fricker and Ray Young, who were awarded The Boustead Trophy.

Runners-up were Bruce Ball, Richard Jones and Dawson Owen, who received The Abraham Plate.

Players enjoyed refreshments before and after play, provided and served by Dawne Abraham and her team of volunteer helpers.

Twenty-four players in the mixed progressive triples tournament sponsored by Beetham Retirement Village enjoyed a sociable day of bowling.

The progressive format allows a change of team members for each of the four games over 15 ends or 90 minutes. New members and visitors mix for a lighthearted tournament that is a happy social occasion.

Prizes were awarded in the categories of skips, directors and leads. The skips winner was Gus McCabe from the Gisborne club with an unbeaten record of four wins (12 points), followed by Mike Chisholm of the Kahutia club with nine points from three wins.

The two winners among the directors were Ngawai Turipa and Tam Buckingham, who each had three wins. They were separated by the countback of ends won, which revealed Turipa as the winner.

Norma Miller also had four wins to take first prize in the leads section, followed by Richard Jones with three wins.

The club championship for the open mixed pairs was contested by 10 teams on Saturday.

They played four games of section play over 15 ends or 90 minutes.

The low entry was behind the move away from a two-life system.

The only team unbeaten at the end were last year’s winners and holders of The Comber Trophy, Ian and Kathy Carroll, who were victorious again.

Barrie Denham and Jan Powell could have challenged for the honours but they drew their last game and finished runners-up.

Even with an outstanding win in their last game their countback of ends won and differential was unlikely to have overtaken the champions.

Kathy Carroll was almost unassailable with her lead bowls, harassing the kitty on most ends all day.
