Earlier, Goldsbury and Ferris went through the preliminary rounds unscathed.

The two junior championships provided most of the drama when the four main contenders took lives off each other to force both events to sudden death.
With a last-ditch effort on Saturday, Tim Sherriff (s) and Ron Robertson forced their way into the last two, then kept their hopes alive by taking a life off the unbeaten Ashli Ferris (s) and Steve Ward pairing in the fourth round.
In the final, Ferris and Ward hit the front in the second end and were never headed, eventually winning 17-10.
In the junior women’s event, the Gibson combo came agonisingly close to pulling off the upset of the championships.
With only one life left, they upended two-lifers and title favourites Kay Goldsbury (s) and Ginny Sherriff 16-14 in the potential final to force the title race into a decider.
In the potential final and final Goldsbury and Sherriff made the early running but the Gibsons came home like a freight train.
In the final, they won seven of the last 10 ends but, at 13-13 going into the last, team Goldsbury dug deep to hang on for a 14-13 victory.
Despite several entrants bailing out at the last minute, a field of 36 braved last Wednesday’s dodgy weather conditions to contest the Beetham Village-sponsored Ernie Robinson Triples.They were rewarded when the sun came out and last-minute stand-in skip Gaylene Harvey was further rewarded when she lifted the trophy.
Three teams had three wins, which meant points differential was needed to determine the final result.
Winners Harvey, Kay Goldsbury and Ray Young had a points diff of +28.
Lyn Trueman (s), Gary Tocker and Norma Miller, with +24, were second and Rod McCulloch (s), Dan Barr and Ron Seabrook, on +6, third.
Poverty BaySeven teams competed for the club open fours championships over four rounds of games of 12 ends on a cold wet Saturday.
Using the two-life system both men’s and women’s sections were reduced to single-life finalists on Sunday in contrastingly warm and windy weather.
Mark Bain (skip), Peter Walters, Jon Davies and Luke Sanders stamped their authority on the men’s section in beating Lex Kennedy (s), Barrie Denham, Tam Buckingham and Andrew Ball 21-4 in the final.
The runners-up interrupted the winners’ progress in the fourth round potential final by taking a life from them, 11-9 .
However, “Team Bain” had kept their best shots to last and won all but two ends of the final to claim the title in fine style.
The women’s event winners were Ora Peipi (s), Val McGreevy, Diane Christie and June Stichbury.
They comprehensively beat Jan Powell (skip), Erin Sutherland, Joy Davis and Kathy Carroll in their last two games, having lost 8-7 to them in round 1.
The high scores of 17-1 and 16-3 did not truly reflect the competitive bowling from Powell’s team.
Peipi’s four maintained the pressure throughout the games, including scoring 13 points in three ends of the final to retain the championship title.
