Gisborne

THE Alex Allan Triples, which had been rained out in September, were finally decided at Gisborne Bowling Club last Wednesday.

Despite clashing with the chartered clubs’ bowls in Hawke’s Bay, a 30-strong field turned out for the Ryman-sponsored event.

Games were tight and no team came through the day unscathed, which meant the six teams with two wins apiece had to be separated by ends won and points differential.

Carol Hawes (skip), Ngawai Turipa and Tim Sherriff got their noses in front, just, with 13 ends won.

Differential was then needed to separate second from third when Harry Green (s), Bruce Easton and Roger Dymock finished tied with Lex Kennedy (s), Larry Kaloucava and Peter Allan, on 12 ends won.

Green’s differential of 13 points gave his trio the edge over the Kennedy combination’s nine points.

The Alex Allan Tournament is a long-standing fixture on the bowling calendar and two of his descendants — Maurice Allan and Anne Day — are still prominent members of the club.

Anne Day was on hand to present her grandfather’s trophy to the winners.

Coming upANOTHER rain-delayed event, the Alex White Triples, will be played on Wednesday, March 27.

Entry sheets for this afternoon-only event are posted at the three city clubs. Entries close the day before.

Only two places are left in the Bronwyn Kay Women’s Pro Pairs scheduled for March 30 and 31.

Bowlers can contact Beverly Davy on 868 3289 or at beverlydavy@xtra.co.nz if they want one of those two spots.
