Third went to Bruce Ball, Val McGreevy and Tony Dobson, with three wins and a +19 differential.
The next event for the adjunct is the regional chartered club women’s tournament at Gisborne Bowling Club on March 28 and 29.
GISBORNE
The David Moore Pharmacy optional pairs 2-4-2 mini-tournament was held last week.
It attracted 16 strong combinations and some very good bowls were seen.
Conditions were ideal — a gentle breeze and light cloud cover keeping the temperature comfortable.
Ronnie Crone and Harry Jackson were the winners, with three wins and a differential of +27, thanks to one staggering 20-0 win.
Arthur Hawes and John McKay were second, with three wins and a +20 differential.
Third place went to Jeff Davis and Beverly Davy with three wins and +14.
POVERTY BAY
The club’s premier event of the season — the 10th Val Smith Open Pairs (2x4x2) tournament — attracted 30 teams.
Sponsored by Ryman Healthcare’s Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village, the tournament was played on the Poverty Bay and Gisborne club greens. Teams played four games a day.
The overall winners and runners-up, and the top three teams from each section all won prizes.
Vern Marshall and Dayvinia Mills dominated Section 1.
They were unbeaten, amassing 24 game points and winning 55 ends.
Wayne and Betty Herring were next, with 19 points and 48 ends, followed by Jeff and Joy Davis, 18 points and 49 ends.
In section 2, Marie Wright and July Williams were also unbeaten. They earned 24 points and won 53 ends.
Seddon Jane and Michelle Brown finished second with 21 points and 48 ends. Ricky Miller and Queenie Takurua were third with 18 points and 48 ends.
Overall winners Marshall and Mills were presented with the Evelyn Mills Memorial Trophy by Ryman Healthcare representative Jane O’Connell.
Wright and Williams claimed the Peck Tray as runners-up.
Ideal conditions and the two different playing surfaces made for an intriguing competition.
Included in the entry fee was a splendid dinner on Saturday night for players and friends. It was prepared by Bowls Gisborne East Coast centre secretary Ritchie Scott.
