GISBORNEChamp of champ fours

GISBORNE club bowlers made three of the four finals but came away with only one title when the Bowls Gisborne-East Coast champion of champions fours were played on Gisborne’s Rawiri Street greens at the weekend.

After copping a 6-18 thumping and losing a life to Poverty Bay, Gisborne’s junior women’s four of Kay Goldsbury (skip), Ginny Sherriff, Kym Brown and Beverly Davy got it together and returned the favour, taking a hard-fought life off Poverty Bay 20-14 under the two-life system.

In their third clash, Gisborne put the foot down in the final against Poverty Bay and ran away with a convincing 20-8 win.

Earlier, Poverty Bay and Gisborne each had wins over Wairoa to knock their southern counterparts out of the contest.

After sending the fancied Kahutia four packing, Gisborne’s Carol Hawes (s), Tanya Harrison (replacing Lorna Reeve), Jennie Evans and Lesley McIntosh lost to Poverty Bay in the senior final, 10-19.

In an early clash, Gisborne’s junior men’s four of Mal Trowell (s), Nathan Trowell, Tim Sherriff and Ashli Ferris smashed Kahutia 24-5 only for the tables to be turned in the final. Kahutia triumphed 12-11 in a last-end thriller.
