HOCKEY

THE Masters’ close win against YMP B in the men’s competition and hard-fought wins to GMC Green and YMP B in the women’s games were highlights of local hockey at the weekend.

Lytton Old Boys Masters and YMP B were locked up 1-1 in the closing stages of their match before David Preddey scored his second goal of the contest to win it for the Masters.

“There were only 30 seconds to go in the game when David scored,” hockey commentator Tony Scragg said.

“The result typified the games between these teams in recent years. On Friday it was the Masters’ turn to celebrate.”

GMC Green had to work for their 4-1 win against Ben Holden Fencing Ngatapa.

“It was only 1-0 to the Green Machine at halftime,” Scragg said.

“Ngatapa showed some real guts to concede only four goals, and to score one of their own against a very good GMC team.

“I know GMC were not happy with the outcome. Their defence had to work really hard to keep Ngatapa out.”

In the other close women’s game, YMP B defeated a resilient Roseland Tavern Te Aowera side 3-0.

“TA showed a lot of courage to deny YMP a bigger margin,” Scragg said.

“TA had some chances to score themselves, too, in the final period.”

The other matches went to form, with big scorelines in most of them.

THC trounced Lytton Old Boys NZ Fruits 15-0. Tamany Tuhou and Chris Fox each added four goals to their season tallies, while Hylam Tukariri picked up a hat-trick.

“It was one-way traffic,” Scragg said.

YMP A beat Gisborne Boys’ High School 15-1.

“YMP showed why they are the defending men’s champions,” Scragg said.

“They are setting themselves up for the clash with THC at the weekend.”

Logan Fergus scored for Boys’ High.

“Scoring a goal against YMP was a good achievement by the students,” Scragg said.

Defending women’s champions YMP A were too strong for Amber Dental Gisborne Girls’ High School. The 6-0 scoreline summed up their dominance.

“YMP women showed what a force they are,” Scragg said.

A hat-trick from Anita Howard played a big part in a 4-0 victory by GMC Kowhai over GMC Gold.

“The result mixes up the mid-table of the women’s competition, and Kowhai are picking up wins where they are needed.”
