The 2025 Cancer Society Basketball Fundraiser at the Gisborne YMCA wrapped up on Day 2 with victory to City Lights in a great drive for a worthy cause.

The Scott Muncaster-led Lights beat Gizzy Hoops 55-42 in the final.

Off Limitz were third, Hustlers fourth, Kiwi Lumber-Jacks fifth and Cougars sixth.

In the final, City Lights industrious left-hander Paora Dewes dominated with 24 points.

Reggie Namana (13) and Muncaster (11) were superb in support of Dewes, while Kingi Rakuraku (12) topped the list for Gizzy Hoops.

Organiser Rosemary Brown was rapt with the event.

“We were pleased and very grateful to our sponsors, and the fact that every one of the participants went home with a prize,” she said.

“Gisborne has a strong basketball community and this fundraiser brought players together, with awareness among both players and spectators of our [Gisborne East Coast] Cancer Society and the importance of its work - especially at this time of the year - in being able to help others.

“Our sponsors have already indicated that they will support us again, and other teams have asked to be added also if we do another event.”
