GISBORNE pro surfer Ricardo Christie’s quest for big points to boost his Qualifying Series campaign has lasted just one round.
Gold Coast-based Christie was this morning (NZ time) eliminated in Round 2 of the US Open of Surfing QS 10,000 contest at California’s Huntington Beach.
Seeded into Round 2 ofthe event, Christie placed third in his heat. The top two advanced.
He scored 11.83 out of 20 for his two best waves (6.63 and 5.20). American Kolohe Andino won the heat with 15.26 (6.93, 8.33) from Brazilian Jesse Mendes on 12.50 (6.27, 6.33), with Uruguay’s Marco Giorgi fourth on 7.27.
Christie went into the US Open sitting 50th on the QS rankings. The top 10 qualify for the 2017 World Surf League Championship Tour, which Christie contested last year.
