RUGBY SEVENS

TOMORROW’S Turanga Sevens event is a chance for players to put their hand up for Poverty Bay selection.

The men’s and women’s Poverty Bay rugby sevens teams are expected to be named soon after the tournament at Rugby Park.

Men’s coach James Warren said players picked for Poverty Bay would have the chance to show what they could do against bigger unions such as Taranaki, Manawatu and Wellington.

“It’s a great pathway for young players in the region,” he said.

Poverty Bay players in the past include George Bridge, who has gone on to play for the All Blacks.

Warren said he hoped to pick the Poverty Bay team from players at the Turanga tournament.

He will prepare his team for the Hurricanes regional tournament at the end of the month.

The women will be coached by Luke Bradley, who also coached the under-18 women’s 15s team at a Hurricanes region tournament last month.

The Turanga Sevens tournament is scheduled to kick off at 10am.
