Poverty Bay Golf Club’s women club champions were decided on Wednesday and the winners were Tessa McDonald (senior), Mary Allan (intermediate) and Karen Crosby (junior).
Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay representative McDonald was a red-hot favourite to win but the 1-handicapper was kept honest by her 17-handicapper opponent Jan Utting in the
first 18 holes of their 36-hole matchplay final.
Utting shot 84 off the stick — seven under her handicap — to trail 3-down after the morning round but McDonald proved too strong in the afternoon and ran out a 9 and 8 winner.
Utting beat Gay Young 4 and 3 in the semis while McDonald knocked out club president Miggles Shanks 3 and 2. Allan added a second intermediate title to her 2015 crown.
She led June MacKinnon 7-up after 18 and went on to win 8 and 7. Crosby, who has played in all three divisions over the years and was once senior runner-up, beat Peri Gayford 6 and 5 in their 27-hole junior final after leading 3-up at the 18-hole break.
