The weather gods unleashed their fury on the national surf lifesaving championships over the weekend, resulting in plenty of carnage, particularly on Saturday.
This Red Beach open women’s crew, in a boat named The Flying Heroes, copped it and they weren’t the only ones to suffer in the southerly swellthat battered competitors and forced officials to shift the under-16 competition to less violent conditions at Waikanae.
Back at Midway, there were multiple incidents in the craft events, including injuries, broken sweeps on surf boats and gear damage.
To the competitors’ credit, they got on with the job with no complaints.
