RUGBY

SHAYDE Skudder has probably played more than 100 rugby games for YMP but the hooker will formally bring up the milestone against Ngatapa tomorrow.

It’s about brotherhood for the 27-year-old skipper — playing for each other.

And whanau.

Skudder’s wife, Paku-Jane Skudder, is YMP’s netball captain.

His father, Colin Skudder, played rugby for the club for many years, at prop.

Shayde Skudder said one of his best memories was playing alongside his brother Chayse and his father in 2016.

Colin Skudder recalled Shayde made his debut for the premier team back in 2008 but he broke his ankle that year. He played at centre in 2008, was openside flanker from 2011 to 2016 and then moved to hooker.

Shayde Skudder said he played Senior 1 rugby for the club in 2009 and 2010, when they won back-to-back titles. The premier side won the Lee Bros Shield in 2010.

He said he had a year at Tokomaru Bay in the Ngati Porou East Coast competition but had played every season with YMP since 2012.

Skudder said that when he watched his father play, he knew that one day it would be him running around in the black and white shirt.

He started playing for Poverty Bay in 2015.
