JAMES van Aswegen and Lily Rolls took home a swag of trophies from Gisborne Trampoline Club's prize-giving this month.

Van Aswegen received five awards for his efforts in trampolining and double mini, while tumbler Rolls received three.

In his first year as a coach, Van Aswegen was named senior coach of the year. He won the awards for most improved senior national, and for best 15/16-year-old in both the trampoline and double mini. He also won — for the first time — the form trophy for technique.

Rolls won the awards for best all-round tumbler of the year, most improved tumbler and sub-junior national women's tumbling.

Van Aswegen said coaching had been a motivating factor in his desire to become a teacher.

The feeling of having a student learn a new move they had been working on was similar to the satisfaction he felt when he learned something new himself, he said.

Van Aswegen, 15, has been trampolining for a decade and says he's still learning. Currently, he's focusing on combinations to include in double flips.

He enjoys the unique nature of the sport.

“It's different from everything else . . . the individual aspect of it,” Van Aswegen said.

He acknowledged the help of head coach Doug Callahan, who he said had worked tirelessly with him on the tramp over the years.

Van Aswegen and Rolls said Callahan put a massive amount of time and effort into their successes, and they wanted to thank him for his ongoing support of them and the club.

Rolls said she almost felt bad after winning every award for which she was eligible as a tumbler.

She only learned of the awards when her name was called out.

“To receive so many was a surprise.”

She is expected to qualify for international selection at her next competitive appearance.

Callahan says Rolls has a great attitude and will keep trying new manoeuvres over and over until she gets them and “comes up with a big smile on her face”.

“Lily's a fantastic tumbler,” Callahan said.

“She picks up new moves quickly and is determined.”
