THE peace and quiet at Makorori Beach will be disturbed by the sound of overworked V belts and centrifugal clutches as the Gisborne Motorcycle Sports Club runs its annual charity scooter/moped race tomorrow.

All entry fees collected will be donated to the Eastland Rescue Helicopter Trust.

To start the day there will be motorcycle races — mini, junior and senior classes — but unlike the usual beach races there will be no long straights.

It will be a fun, tight course so anyone with any type of motorbike can enter and have some fun. You don’t need to be a club member to come and have a go.

The scooter/moped race will be a team event with riders swapping every 20 minutes. Depending on time, the race will be either 80 minutes or 120 minutes long.

Three classes will be racing together — scooter/moped 50cc, scooter/moped small wheel open (any engine size) and up to 65cc dirt bike/quad class (basically adults on children’s bikes).

No prizes will be given for podium finishes. Instead, awards will be made for best fall off, best dressed, hard luck story, furthest travelled, most colourful, loudest team, funniest team, most unskilled team, most amazing team, best theme team.

Wairoa will again send a team up to try to take the silverware home.
