Bay of Plenty junior teams here to play

HOCKEY by Murray Robertson

JUNIOR hockey teams from the Bay of Plenty will be in action against their Gisborne counterparts this weekend in the Noel Morrow under-13 boys’ and Mini Tupara u13 girls’ tournaments.

The tournaments originated in Gisborne and were named after two stalwarts of Poverty Bay Hockey.

Five teams will be in each tournament.

The competing teams are Poverty Bay, Tauranga A, Tauranga Development, Bay of Plenty A and Bay of Plenty Development.

The tournaments start with a karakia and team parade at 2.30pm tomorrow.

The Poverty Bay boys’ team are in action at 6.15pm tomorrow against Tauranga Development. The Bay girls play their first game at 8.30am on Sunday, also against the Tauranga Development team.

The boys’ team play BoP A next at 9.30am on Sunday; the girls play them at 10.45am.

At 11.15am the boys play Tauranga A, and the girls play the Tauranga A side at 12.30pm.

In their final games the Bay boys play BoP Development at 2pm, and the girls play BoP Development at 3.

The prizegiving follows.

The Poverty Bay boys’ team members are: John Broad, Cody Dyer, Ollie Egan, Austin Fergus, Tom Fletcher, William Matthews, Matt McKendry, Toby Morrison, James Price, Dylan Storey, Hamish Swann, Sam Williams, Harry Hayward, Sam Gaddum, Bjorn Haraki, Allies Rangihuna and Tarun Wilson. They are coached by Bonny Seymour.

The Bay girls’ team members are: Gloria Allen, Charli Candy, Chloe Carrington, Chloe Kapene, Jade Martin, Rose Noble, Leah Tupara, Zoe Watts, Pae Wilcox-Taylor, Kalianne Taylor, Bree-Luite Thompson, Phoenix Battin, Ruby Jean Williams, Nasya Awanuirangi Battin, Cassidy Mahia Pait and Keeley Smiler. They are coached by Maika Akroyd.

Because of the tournament, no senior hockey will be played this weekend.
