THE Bays Bronze and Lucy May trophies remain in Poverty Bay’s possession after one-point victories over their Hawke’s Bay rivals this week.

Poverty Bay’s two 12-women teams hit the road for the resumption of the annual fixture, which Covid-19 put paid to last year.

They headed to Hastings’ Bridge Pa course on Sunday as defending champions in both divisions — bronze and silver.

They returned on Tuesday after a nail-biting but ultimately successful defence of the silverware.

The 9½-8½ results in both ties told the story after 18 holes of handicap matchplay and nine of combined stableford on a heavy course on Monday.

Players were expecting worse after the weather forecast but while they were tested, particularly in the afternoon, it was not as bad as predicted.

In the Lucy May clash, Poverty Bay won the singles matches 6½ to 5½ and the combined stableford honours were shared 3-apiece.

Brigitt Whyte, in her first taste of Lucy May, had two wins, as did Mary Allan, Debbie Kirkpatrick and Pat Johansen.

Rochelle Taewa had a half and a win.

The Bays Bronze clash was a mirror image of the Lucy May.

Poverty Bay led 6½-5½ after the singles and the combined stableford was 3-apiece.

For Poverty Bay, Taina Paku, Elaine Westwood and June MacKinnon notched two wins each while Hiria McClutchie had a half and a win.

Westwood and Kirsty Shaw’s total of 36 points was the best out of both divisions.

Most of the district’s clubs were represented in the Poverty Bay teams.
