Liam Barbier showed fight yesterday.
The 16 year-old leg-spinner, having come in at No.9 against Hamilton, battled for an hour and 16 minutes with technique and application to face 96 balls and lead Poverty Bay’s run-scorers with 30 in a nine-wicket loss.
Having come eighth in the T20 component of
the Northern Districts boys’ senior secondary schools’ cricket tournament in Rotorua, the Nathan Trowell-led Poverty Bay side were to play off for seventh spot in the 50-over competition against Bay of Plenty Lakelands today.
On a still day Boord Park in 26-degree heat, Trowell won the toss and opted to bat against a side missing key players from Hamilton Boys’ High School, who were on national Gillette Cup first 11 duties at Lincoln University.
Poverty Bay were dismissed for 114 in 43.4 overs, Barbier and No.7 Logan Andrews (their second-best-performed batsman with 23) coming together with the Bay 28-7 after 13 overs.
