Gisborne Boys’ High School hosts the annual Super 8 Badminton Competition at the Badminton Centre (134 Roebuck Road) on Thursday from 8.30am to 6pm and Friday from 8.30am to 1pm.

Super 8 competitions were formed in 1997/98 and incorporate eight boys’ high schools from their respective provincial cities of the central North Island — at first involving just rugby and cricket.

Since that time, the Super 8 concept has grown to include not only 10 sports competitions but also a cultural festival and professional development programmes for management staff and curriculum teachers.

Gisborne Boys’ High School has been involved since the early years. It placed 2nd in 2002, won in 2003, was 2nd in 2004, and from 2005-2008 did not compete. In 2009 it returned to the competition and competed every year except for 2018; it now returns this year with a younger team.

This is the second time Gisborne Boys’ High School has hosted the Super 8 badminton competition and it hopes locals will show their support by watching some of the matches.

Some top NZ-ranked junior players from out of the district will be here, so there is the promise of exciting matches to the level we haven’t seen locally in juniors for a few years.

Supporters are welcome to come and see some top badminton.
