EASTLAND will host the third round of the inter-association masters’ badminton competition this weekend. They will play Bay of Plenty (2) and Waitakere (4). Also playing in Gisborne will be Waikato (2).

Eastland team members are Mark Beard, David Colbert, Justin Kent, Debbie Brown (manager), Gabrielle Perano and Makuini Winiata from Gisborne Badminton Club; Hayley Warman from the Patutahi club; and loan player Gary Teague from Manawatu. The coach is Ross Hannam.

Games will be played at the Badminton Centre in Childers Road, with games starting at 9am. Spectators are welcome.

EASTLAND won both of their games in the second round of inter-association masters’ competition, held this month in Hamilton.

They beat North Harbour (4) 9-3 and Auckland (4) 10-2.

Team members were David Colbert, Justin Kent, Ross Hannam (coach), Gary Teague (Manawatu), Debbie Brown (manager), Hayley Warman, Gabrielle Perano, Alica Richardson-Marr, Makuini Winiata and Scott Crago, who filled in at the last minute to cover for the injured Mark Beard.

With Beard unable to play, Eastland had to try some new combinations.

Against North Harbour (4), the early games were played in cold, difficult conditions.

The women’s combination of Warman and Winiata and the men’s combination of Kent and Crago lost their matches.

Next on for the women, Brown and Winiata won in two games.

For the men, Colbert and Crago won a close first game and dominated the second to win in two games.

Perano and Richardson-Marr lost their women’s doubles match in two close games.

Kent and Teague won their men’s match in two games. Teague then teamed up with Colbert to win another match in two games.

Brown and Perano continued the trend with a two-game women’s doubles victory.

In the mixed doubles, new combination Crago and Warman lost their first game, but came back strongly in the second and took the match with a 22-20 scoreline in the third game.

Teague and Richardson-Marr, Colbert and Brown, and Kent and Perano all won their matches in two games.

EASTLAND had a great start to their tie against Auckland (4).

Women’s doubles combinations Warman and Winiata, and Perano and Richardson-Marr, and men’s pair Kent and

Crago, all played at the same time and all won their matches in two games.

Brown and Winiata won their match in two games.

Colbert and Crago won their first game, lost the second by two points, and dominated the third to win the match.

Kent and Teague won their match in three games.

Perano and Brown, and Colbert and Teague won their matches in two games, which made it a clean sweep for

Eastland in the men’s and women’s doubles.

In the mixed combinations, Crago and Warman lost their match in two games.

Teague and Richardson-Marr, and Colbert and Brown won their matches in two games.

Kent and Perano lost their first game, won the second and lost the third.

Doubles — Men: Colbert/Teague won 21-12, 21-17; Kent/Teague won 21-15, 21-18; Colbert/Crago won 21-18, 21-8; Kent/Crago lost 21-14, 13-21, 19-21.

Women: Brown/Perano won 21-16, 21-15; Perano/Richardson-Marr lost 17-21, 20-22; Brown/Winiata won 21-17, 21-15; Winiata/Warman lost 12-21, 17-21.

Mixed: Kent/Perano won 22-20, 21-14; Colbert/Brown won 21-7, 21-19; Teague/Richardson-Marr won 21-12, 21-15; Crago/Warman won 17-21, 21-12, 22-20.

Eastland 10 Auckland (4) 2

Doubles — Men: Colbert/Teague won 21-14, 21-19; Kent/Teague won 21-23, 21-19, 21-13; Colbert/Crago won 21-18, 21-23, 12-21; Kent/Crago won 21-16, 21-17.

Women: Brown/Perano won 31-13, 21-13; Perano/Richardson-Marr won 21-17, 21-13; Brown/Winiata won 21-18, 22-20; Warman/Winiata won 21-17, 21-12.

Mixed: Kent/Perano lost 20-22, 21-17, 21-19; Colbert/Brown won 21-9, 21-10; Teague/Richardson-Marr won 21-16, 21-16; Crago/Warman 21-19, 21-19.
