Tolaga Bay

DIVISION 1 winners at Tolaga Bay Bowling Club’s annual two-day triples tournament were Mark Bain and Marilyn Knowles of the Poverty Bay club and John “Hone” Burema of Tolaga Bay.

Burema is one of the new members the Tolaga Bay club has attracted this season.

The tournament, sponsored by Heritage Life Te Wiremu House, attracted an excellent entry that included bowlers from Ohope, Te Karaka, Wairoa and the Gisborne city clubs.

Rain delayed the start of play on both the Saturday and Sunday mornings, but a “squeegee brigade” of Tolaga Bay club members cleared surface water from the green.

On the first day, teams played four games of 10 ends, with a 90-minute time limit for each game. Results determined which of three divisions the teams would contest on the Sunday.

Each team played four games on the second day to determine the winners and runners-up of the three divisions.

Runners-up were local players Joanne Atkins, new member Ben Elkington and Mike Namana.

Division 2 was a Te Karaka Bowling Club benefit . . . Arthur and Janet Baty and Diane Murray took first place, while Andy and Del Tamanui and Willie Murray were runners-up.

Wairoa’s Peter Robinson and Gisborne Bowling Club’s Mark Walker and Kahu Kerekere found themselves in Division 3 after Day 1 but played much better on Sunday to win that division.

Regular visitors to the Tolaga Bay club, Dave and Bobbie Beattie, combined with daughter and Gisborne clubmate Tanya Harrison to finish runners-up.

Players were treated with the usual tremendous East Coast hospitality over the two days. Breakfast, morning and afternoon teas, lunch and dinner were all laid on.

Players were also impressed with the condition of the green, the result of the dedication and many hours of work by the club’s greenkeeper, Chas Henry.

The Tolaga Bay club celebrates its centenary in 2022 and arrangements are already under way to mark the occasion.

Kahutia’s Whiteman, clubmate Marie Wright and Te Karaka’s Sarah Brown were the only unbeaten team. Brown played outstanding bowls on both days.

Bowling conditions for the Easter Saturday/Sunday tournament were perfect.

Club president David File expressed disappointment that the field was reduced from 12 teams to eight through two late withdrawals and two “no-shows”.

Another draw had to be made, and the tournament was changed to a round-robin format, all teams playing each other over the two days — a total of seven games each.

Runners-up were Te Karaka’s File, Steve Goldsbury and Duncan Macpherson. On the first day they lost to Whiteman and in the last round drew with the third placegetters — Te Karaka’s Bruno Lourie and Lofty Hurrell, and guest player Kay Goldsbury. Lourie’s team had also drawn with Whiteman’s side on Saturday.

All eight teams received prizes, thanks to the generosity of the host club. — Trevor Mills

Poverty Bay

The club’s Easter tournament on Saturday and Sunday attracted 39 players.

Sponsors included Craigs lnvestment Partners, LJ Hooker, Gisborne Motors, Pak’nSave and Liquorland.

Apart from sea mist early on Saturday, conditions on both days were excellent.

Each day, teams played four games of 10 ends with a time limit of 90 minutes a game.

After Day 1 the teams were divided into two sections to compete for three prizes in each section. This enhanced the competitive spirit, as shown by the number of drawn games.

So little separated the top six teams from Day 1 that the winners were still in doubt until the last bowl came to rest.

The overall winners were home club trio Lex Kennedy (skip), Val McGreevy and Norma Miller, with two wins and two draws.

They headed off two Gisborne Bowling Club teams who each had two wins and a draw. Robin Jefferson (s), with Tim and Ginny Sherriff won six more ends than Maurice Taylor (s), Lesley Mclntosh and Ron Robertson.

The pressure in the lower division was no less, where in the third round of the day two of the three games were drawn.

Jan Powell (s), Erin Sutherland and Diane Christie had three wins and a draw to take first prize in this section.

Second place went to Glenda Kapene (s), Raeleen Tangiora, and Jo Sturmey, whose only Day 2 loss was to Powell’s team.

Third place was decided by a difference of two ends between Murray Murton (s), Pat Murton and Jock Smith (two wins and 21 ends) and Dave Hooper (s), NgawaiTuripa and Trish Leach (two wins and 19 ends).

Post-play pizzas while the scores were added up and the prizes were awarded concluded a successful event.

Congratulations go to Luke Sanders for competing in the national under-18 singles at Wellington over the weekend.

The best wishes of the club go to members playing in regional and national finals, as well as those playing in centre champion of champions competitions.
