GisborneForty-eight players filled Gisborne Bowling Club’s green for the closing day single entry triples on Saturday.

The 16 teams all thoroughly enjoyed another sunny, warm afternoon, which ensured a pleasant couple of hours.

Three teams finished with two wins, but placings were clear-cut, with some impressively large differentials.

The winners — Arthur Hawes (skip) Sel Gribble and Ginny Sherriff — had a massive +29 while Rod McCulloch (s), Mark Walker and Eric Trafford took second with +17.

They had a comfortable margin over Jamey Ferris (s), Bruce Smart and Tony Barton ,whose differential was +9.

After play finished, a special general meeting authorised the executive committee to proceed with the investigation and installation of a lift at the southern end of the clubhouse.

A social few hours followed, with a barbecue and sumptuous food which provided a fitting finale to another successful season.

Poverty BaySaturday’s closing day for the Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s summer season saw a great turnout of 46 players for the annual men v women tournament.

With an imbalance of one woman, Mike kindly became Michelle and swapped sides for the day to make the numbers even.

A three-game format saw the women ahead by two points after two rounds but a good comeback by the men to even things up, and a tie was declared. It was an enjoyable day for all.

The overall winning team were Val McGreevy, Marilyn Knowles and Robyn Arthur with three wins.

The afternoon then moved to a prize-giving ceremony for the season’s tournaments and championship events, which was attended by Gisborne East Coast centre president Robin Jefferson.

Awards were presented by club president Lex Kennedy, vice-president Jon Davis and secretary Val McGreevy.

Two special prizes were awarded for the most improved players. Robyn Arthur was the most improved first-year woman bowler and John Fricker the most improved junior men’s player.

President Kennedy then congratulated all players for their enthusiasm and participation at all club events, and those players who had won centre titles during the season.

The winter season started yesterday.

KAHUTIAThe Beetham Lifestyle Village Optional Triples Tournament was held last week, with 12 teams entered.

Outright winners were Mo Kapua (s), Jock Smith and Thomas Terekia. They were the only team with four wins and finished on eight points and a differential of +15.

Going into the last game undefeated, they scraped home 7-6 over Brian Cairns (s), Kahu Kerekere and Nona Aston.

Judy Taylor (s), Joyce Wagner and Trish Leach were runners-up on six points (+10) while Ropata Ruwhiu (s), Joy Davis and Tam Buckingham took third with six points but a lesser differential.

Robin McGreivy presented the prizes on behalf of the sponsors.

The club hosted the inaugural Specsavers optional triples and 12 teams enjoyed the perfect weather and excellent green.

No team gained four wins but Charlie Ure (s), Betty Jackson and Kathryn Flaugere were victorious on three wins and a differential of +19.

They went into the last game with three big wins but could not hold out Ropata Ruwhiu (s), Trevor Phelps and Steve Jenkins, who pipped them 7-6.

Robin Jefferson (s), Dayvinia Mills and Jim Hongara were second on three wins and a differential of +14.

Two other teams had three wins, Judy Taylor (s), Mo Kapua and Ray Young finishing ahead of Mike Chisholm (s), Brian Cairns and Ian Johnston.

The sponsor’s local franchise holder, Nick Whittingham, presented the prizes.

The mid-week aggregate competition is into its closing stages and attracting more interest.

Jock Smith, with 92 points, has increased his lead to five points over Charlie Ure and Frank McLoughlin, both on 87.

A reminder to bowlers from all clubs that entries for Saturday’s Liquorland closing day tournament close tomorrow at 4pm.
