GisborneThe rain held off just long enough to allow some play when the Gisborne Bowling Club held its closing day, annual prize-giving and dinner on Saturday.

Skip Robin Jefferson was well supported by Lesley McIntosh and Angela Gibson-Sam in the Eastland Group Triples as they compiled a huge 18-point differential to pocket the major spoils.

Two teams shared second place after each finished with a five-point differential and the same number of ends won.

Kahutia’s Dayvinia Mills, fresh from winning the national club singles title, skipped Dan Barr and Jim Wilson in one trio and Ricky Miller skipped Lorna Reeve and Peter Gledhill in the other.

Medals and glittering trophies were shared by a wide cross-section of the club’s competitive bowlers, the most notable haul being Ginny Sherriff’s clean sweep of the junior women’s titles.

Sherriff’s full house included the singles, pairs, triples, fours and mixed pairs championships.

The most improved players of the 2017-18 season were Angela Gibson-Sam and Jim Wilson.

Club president Carol Hawes, presiding over her last prize-giving before stepping away from the helm, also congratulated all the bowlers who had won Bowls Gisborne-East Coast titles and made special mention of the volunteers who keep the club functioning.
