Coming events — Saturday: mixed pairs 2x4x2 open tournament, sponsored by Sunshine Brewery. Late entrants may be disappointed as a maximum of 16 teams can compete.
Monday, October 23: junior triples club championship.
Gisborne
It may have been quiet domestically, but Gisborne’s competitive bowlers were flying the club flag high at centre level last weekend.
Skip Bobbie Beattie notched up her 30th centre title and lead Barbara Gibson, her first, as the two joined with Bobbie’s daughter Tanya Harrison to win the Gisborne-East Coast women’s triples title at Gisborne’s Rawiri Street venue on Sunday.
Not to be outdone, veteran Arthur Hawes (skip) teamed with David Beattie and Mal Trowell to add the men’s title to the club’s trophy cabinet.
A third Gisborne team — Bob McIlroy (s), July Hoepo and Mark Walker — bowed out in the semifinals.
Even the losing finalists, Te Karaka’s David File (s), Steve Goldsbury and Duncan Macpherson, had a Gisborne connection. Goldsbury is a dual Te Karaka/Gisborne member and Macpherson an associate member.
Junior inter-club
During the week, club selector Arthur Hawes named the two Gisborne teams to defend the Peck and Yelverton shields at tournaments to be played on the Gisborne greens on Sunday. The two inter-club events are for bowlers with less than eight years’ bowling experience.
In the women’s Peck Shield team, Beverly Davy will play the singles, Ginny Sherriff and Kay Goldsbury, the pairs, and Margot Willock, Kym Brown, Barbara Gibson and Adrienne Torrie, the fours. Lorna Reeve will manage the women’s team.
Jamey Ferris will play the singles in the men’s Yelverton Shield contest, Tim Sherriff and Mark Walker, the pairs, and Mal Trowell, Don Green, Jim Wilson and Roger Dymock, the fours. Maurice Allan is manager.
Jack Clark Triples
The Jack Clark open triples tournament scheduled for October 25 at Gisborne will be moved to another date to avoid a clash with the two-day East Coast chartered clubs triples tournament, which is to be played on the Gisborne greens on October 24 and 25.
