Gisborne Bowling Club holds its marquee event this weekend with the Burton Cup at stake.

This was first contested in 1910, and the tournament continued during two world wars. It has been cancelled just four times.

It is now played over two days in the classic fours format, with 16 mixed teams of four. All teams must play singles, pairs, triples and fours.

On the sponsorship front, the Eastland Group has contributed prize money and Gear Meat will keep hunger pangs at bay.

All 16 entries will be worth watching, and vaccinated spectators are welcome to watch the play of some of the district's top bowlers, as well as those visitors who enjoy the event so much they keep coming back.

Last year's winning skip, Queenie Takurua, has her team back to defend their title.

Previous winners and hopefuls will be just as determined to get their hands on the magnificent Burton Cup.

The third and final night of Poverty Bay Bowling Club's Twilight Triples was held on a hot evening.

Play did not start until 5.30pm in the Star Service Centre-sponsored event.

Two of the teams were pairs.

Two teams won both of their games but the overall winners, with eight ends, were Dave Hooper (skip), Diane Doyle (director) and June Kinder (lead).

Second, with six ends, were Kim Walters (s) and Anna Colvin.
