Prizes were awarded to
winners and runners-up in the lead, director and skip categories.
Tam Buckingham, with four wins, was the best lead, followed by Lyn Evans on three wins and 25 ends.
In the director section, the result was clearcut. Alic Brown (Kahutia) had four wins, followed by Alf Land (Kah) with three wins and 22 ends.
There were four contenders for prizes among the skips, with each player notching three wins.
Maurice Allan’s 28 ends and differential of +27 earned him the honours from Carol Hawes (Gisborne) and Erin Sutherland, who had identical results of 22 ends and a +8 differential.
The progressive format proved popular and may well feature more often in the future.
Junior fours club champs
The men’s and women’s junior fours club championships were held on Sunday. The format was round-robin play over three rounds of 15 ends, with a time limit of two hours a round.
Due to an unforeseen late commitment one team had to pull out of the tournament, meaning the single team who entered progressed to the Gisborne East Coast centre champion of champions unopposed.
The men’s championship was well supported, with 16 out of a possible 17 eligible members competing.
Only one team ended the tournament unbeaten — John Fricker (s), Dave Hooper, Mike Travers and Jareth Gaskin, who combined particularly well for a deserved victory.
The three other teams each won one match. Tam Buckingham (s), Chris Valentine, Andrew Ball and Flynn Hall were runners-up.
It was encouraging to see the club’s student members — Rickie Peipi, Luke Sanders, Jareth Gaskin and Flynn Hall — have raised their skills levels remarkably this year. We hope they will all become future champions.
The tournamentwas contested in a good spirit. All players gave their best and most matches were closely run affairs.
