Poverty Bay

Mixed triples

The Beetham Lifestyle Village Mixed Triples was held on Wednesday, November 22.

The format was progressive triples over four rounds of 10 ends with a 90-minute time limit each round.

Thirty-nine players contested this popular tournament including 15 from other city clubs.

Prizes were awarded to winners and runners-up in the lead, director and skip categories.

Tam Buckingham, with four wins, was the best lead, followed by Lyn Evans on three wins and 25 ends.

In the director section, the result was clearcut. Alic Brown (Kahutia) had four wins, followed by Alf Land (Kah) with three wins and 22 ends.

There were four contenders for prizes among the skips, with each player notching three wins.

Maurice Allan’s 28 ends and differential of +27 earned him the honours from Carol Hawes (Gisborne) and Erin Sutherland, who had identical results of 22 ends and a +8 differential.

The progressive format proved popular and may well feature more often in the future.

Junior fours club champs

The men’s and women’s junior fours club championships were held on Sunday. The format was round-robin play over three rounds of 15 ends, with a time limit of two hours a round.

Due to an unforeseen late commitment one team had to pull out of the tournament, meaning the single team who entered progressed to the Gisborne East Coast centre champion of champions unopposed.

The men’s championship was well supported, with 16 out of a possible 17 eligible members competing.

Only one team ended the tournament unbeaten — John Fricker (s), Dave Hooper, Mike Travers and Jareth Gaskin, who combined particularly well for a deserved victory.

The three other teams each won one match. Tam Buckingham (s), Chris Valentine, Andrew Ball and Flynn Hall were runners-up.

It was encouraging to see the club’s student members — Rickie Peipi, Luke Sanders, Jareth Gaskin and Flynn Hall — have raised their skills levels remarkably this year. We hope they will all become future champions.

The tournamentwas contested in a good spirit. All players gave their best and most matches were closely run affairs.

Interclub

The club wish the teams representing Poverty Bay at the interclub on Saturday the best of bowling good fortune.

Coming up: Special half-day mini tournament, Tuesday, Dec 5, 12.30; Ryman Healthcare Rex Rigney Christmas Tournament, Thursday, Dec 14, 1.30pm

Gisborne

Bellerby Cup graded fours

The Bellerby Cup returned “home” after being shared by bowlers from other clubs over the past three years.

Gisborne members Queenie Takurua (skip), Adrienne Smiler, Anne Day and Ashli Ferris bagged the trophy at the club’s marquee graded fours event.

They finished with a maximum 12 points and won 28 ends.

Kahutia’s Mike Chisholm (s), Harry Green, Alic Brown and Frank McLouglin were second, also with 12 points but with 24 ends won.

The Lyn Trueman-skipped Kahutia quartet of Bill Campbell, Diana Oates and Ray Young were third. They ended tied with Gisborne’s Carol Hawes (s), Lorna Reeve, Lesley McIntosh and Peter Allan on nine points and 24 ends won, but Trueman’s four had a superior differential of +22 to Hawes’ +16.
