IN a gap between the showers on Sunday, Mal Trowell (skip), Tim Sherriff, Nathan Trowell and Ashli Ferris took firm hold of the club fours title for players with under eight years of bowls experience. They did it without losing a life.

Harry Jackson (s), Dan Barr, Peter Allan and Reg Hart put up a fight but were beaten 16-12 in the potential final, which had been held over from last week’s rain-interrupted event.

Hilton Croskery Triples

SAME captain, new crew. Evergreen Maurice Taylor was at the helm for his second win of the season at last week’s open triples tournament for the Hilton Croskery Memorial Cup.

This time around it was Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s Ngawai Turipa and Marion Jones who provided the extra steam.

Jeff Davis (s), Rod Young and Karen Higgins were second, with Carol Hawes (s), Beverly Davy and Geoff Willson third.

Gisborne Glass was the sponsor.

Regional interclub finals

GISBORNE’S champion women’s interclub team fell one game short at the regional interclub finals in Palmerston North on Saturday.

Although the Gisborne seven of Bobbie Beattie, Tanya Harrison, Queenie Takurua, Ginny Sherriff, Beverly Davy, Lorna Reeve (captain) and Carol Hawes beat eventual winners Havelock North in two games out of three, they needed just one more win and a stronger points differential against teams from either Manawatu or the Wairarapa to qualify for next month’s national finals.

Poverty Bay

As winners of the centre women’s Division 2 interclub competition, the Poverty Bay team of Joy Davis, June Stichbury, Kathryn Flaugere, Robyn Arthur, Ngawai Turipa, Dawne Abraham and Lesley Holmes represented the Gisborne-East Coast Centre in the regional finals at Palmerston North on Saturday.

Teams from the Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa and Manawatu regions were represented by clubs from Napier, Carrington and Bulls respectively.

Contrary to the poor weather forecast, excellent conditions prevailed for the singles, pairs and fours games — three of each.

The Northern Club has outstanding facilities, and supplied splendid refreshments.

Of the nine matches played, two were won. Poverty Bay played their best on an unfamiliar surface with rinks of varying condition against some talented and experienced opposition.

Singles rep Joy Davis beat her Hawke’s Bay opponent with a creditable score of 21-10.

Pairs reps June Stichbury and Kathryn Flaugere mastered the green well enough to win their final game against Bulls club 15-12.

The fours team played fine attacking bowls. Many ends required a measure to determine the winning shot. They were disappointed not to have a win.

The team agreed that they had benefited from the experience and enjoyed the privilege of representing the centre and the club.

The junior mixed pairs club championship has still to be concluded.

Three teams have one life left in the competition. A date for the final games has not yet been fixed.

COMING UP

February 24 and 25: Val Smith 2x4x2 pairs. This is the club’s premier tournament. More entries are sought to raise participation to a customary level. This competition is open to all members from other clubs.

March 3 and 4: club handicap singles.
