KahutiaKAHUTIA Bowling Club wound up its 2015/2016 season with the Liquorland sponsored Classic Fours on Saturday.

Sixty-four players, including a good representation from the Gisborne and Poverty Bay clubs, took the greens.

Sixteen teams of four faced one round of singles and triples, two rounds of pairs, and one game of fours during the day.

Tournament director Joe (Cuzz) Wimutu, ably assisted by wife Lois, organised a complicated draw and format, which covered up to 16 rinks during the day.

Mark Bain (skip), Dayvinia Mills, Jim Hongara and Marty Ryan — who won six games out of the seven played and ended with 12 points — were the outright winners.

Runners-up were Lesley Seymour (s), Alic Brown, Anita Vaotuua and Trish Leach with five wins for 10 points and a differential of +15.

Lyn Trueman (s), Ricky Miller, Diane Christie and Eric Craill were third on 10 points (5 wins) and +6.

Two teams had four wins and a draw. Robin Jefferson (s), Lesley McIntosh, Geoff Willson and Nona Aston were fourth, and Ray Smith (s), Jock Smith, Thomas Terekia and Ray Young fifth.

Following the tournament the club held its annual prizegiving.

One of the highlights was a Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti Volunteer Special Merit award presented to Emily Hongara for her great fundraising efforts, which allowed the club’s talented young bowlers Leighton and Lucy Shanks to play in the Bowls NZ national under-18 and U21 events in Christchurch over Easter.

Another round of the mid-week aggregate competition played last Thursday saw Jock Smith maintain his five-point lead over Charlie Ure and junior Frank McLoughlin.

Smith is now the favourite to win the event outright.
