Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s Rex Rigney Christmas Tournament proved to be a successful fun tournament.

Three games of one-hour triples were played in the tournament, which was sponsored by Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village.

With an entry of 33 players, three teams had only two players.

The winning team was Dayvinia Mills (skip) and Norma Miller (director). They were the only team to win all three games.

Second were Ian Carroll (s) and Bruce Gledhill (d), who had two wins and a draw.

Five teams had two wins. Jan Powell (s) and Joan Gledhill (d) won the most ends, 15, to be placed third.

Two teams won 12 ends but Barrie Denham (s), Dawson Owen (d) and Bruce Smart (lead) had the biggest differential so were fourth .

Before the prizegiving, club president Peter Walters acknowledged the contributions of Val McGreevy and Lex Kennedy to the club.

Val has been a member for 17 years and been an active qualified coach, secretary and board member. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

Lex has been president and bar manager and they have both been successful on the bowling green, too.

They are leaving the district to be nearer to family.

After the prizegiving, members enjoyed delicious food with some singing and lucky prizes between courses.

Members look forward to the Christmas break, then to the Graham Shield Optional Fours, which is to be played on Saturday, January 7.

Christmas came early at Kahutia Bowling Club last Saturday afternoon.

The Heavy Equipment Services-sponsored Harold Powell Optional Triples attracted 12 teams comprising 36 players.

They included some members from the Gisborne and Poverty Bay bowling clubs.

Third were Tony Dobson, Marie Thomas and Kevin Bright.

The theme for the day was “red and white”.From those dressed up for the occasion, club member Noel Dunn was the clear winner of the Santa Claus lookalike section.

An enjoyable social hour followed the presentation of prizes, and sponsor Tony Kendrew was thanked for his company’s support.
