Poverty Bay Bowling Club's Open Championship Mixed Fours were played as twilight games on Tuesday and Thursday last week.

Section play comprised four games of 15 ends or two hours

The team of Barrie Denham (skip), June Stichbury (3), Kathryn Flaugere (2) and Ngawai Turipa (l) won the championship with four wins. They all played great bowls, especially when they needed to.

Two teams had three wins.

Lex Kennedy (s), Val McGreevy (3), Lesley Seymour (2) and Bruce Gledhill (l) were second, with 33 ends won.

Betty Herring (s), Bruce Ball (3), Diane Christie (2) and Andrew Ball (l) were third, with 31 ends won.

Little separated the top three teams. Denham beat Kennedy by two points, 13-11, and Herring by one point, 12-11.

The championship was played in good spirit with many exciting ends when the lead changed frequently.

The team skipped by Ora Peipi was the only one with three junior players — Norma Miller (3), Les Whittington (2) and Dusty Miller (l).

They won a thrilling game against Dave Hooper (s), Peter Walters (3), Kym Walters (2) and Otto Louw (l), 14-13.
