Poverty Bay Bowling Club's open fours club championships were held over two days at the weekend and provided great entertainment.

The two-life format was used with games of one and three-quarter hours or 15 ends.

The women's open fours competition was won by Betty Herring (s), Kathryn Flaugere (d), Jean Patterson (2), and Ngawai Turipa (l).

In the final they defeated Jan Powell (s), Diane Christie (d), Diane Doyle (2) and Kathy Carroll (l) 15-10. The competition was close, though, as Powell's team defeated Herring's 15-12 in the first round.

The team of Joy Davis (s), Jessie Davis-Law (d) Cheryl Jenkins (2) and Anita Vaotuua (l) had two close losses. Herring's team beat them 9-7 and Powell's, 11-10.

In the men's open fours final, both teams had only one life.

Dave Hooper (s), Peter Walters (d), Ron Seabrook (2) and Bruce Gledhill (l) defeated John Kora (s), John Andrews (d), Dawson Owen (2) and Jack Clark (l) 13-11 in a close game, which was level after 12 ends.

Hooper's team defeated Kora's 15-12 in the first round but Kora's team defeated Hooper's 17-10 in the fourth.

In the first round, the team of Barrie Denham (s), Jon Davies (d), Larry Kaloukava (l) and Bruce Smart (l) surprised everyone by defeating Ian Carroll (s), Jeff Davis (d), Steve Phillips (2) and Richard Jones (l) 13-4.

In the last six ends, Carroll's team had two or three bowls near the jack before Denham bowled brilliantly to take the shot.

NORMA Miller skipped the winners of the Poverty Bay Bowling Club women's junior championship fours.

Win Baker was director, Joan Gledhill was No.2 and Anna Colvin was lead.

They played two games against Diane Doyle (s), Jean Patterson (d), Jenny Amor (2) and Jude Hall (l).

The first game was exciting for players and spectators. Doyle's team were ahead most of the game but the teams went into the last end locked at 7-7 and Miller's team won 8-7.

The final was also competitive. Miller's team won 11-6, but not without more excitement as Doyle won the last end with an amazing shot.

Andrew Ball skipped the winners of the men's junior fours. Gerry Kora was director, Dusty Miller was No.2, and Otto Louw was lead.

The championship games were played in pleasant twilight conditions using the two-life system with games of 90 minutes or 12 ends, with no time limit for the finals.

Kahutia Bowling Club's senior men's and women's championship pairs were played at the weekend.

Eight teams entered the men's event, in which unbeaten winners Alastair Macpherson (skip) and George Vaotuua (lead) defeated Steve Jenkins (s) and Joe Wimutu (l) 18-10 in the final.
