Around the greens: club bowls news

Poverty Bay Bowling Club's junior singles championships were held last week for players with bowls experience of up to three years and up to eight years.

The two-life system was used and the games were played over two beautiful evenings starting at 4.30pm.

The final for the eight-years-and-under men's singles had to be completed during the day. The games were first to 21 or 90 minutes, except for the finals, which had no time limit.

The women's eight-years-and-under championship was won by Kathryn Flaugere. The controllers appreciated Win Baker playing up a level to provide competition for Flaugere as the other eight-years-and-under club women were unable to compete.

The women's three-years and-under championship had some very competitive games which club members thoroughly enjoyed watching. The final was won by Anna Colvin, who had a close game against a new bowler, Krystal Williams.

The men's three-years-and-under championship was won by John Andzue (Andrews) in another close game against Jack Clark.

In the men's eight-years-and-under competition, Dusty Miller played the shot of the championship in his first game against Andrew Ball. On the last end Miller was ahead 19-15 and Ball was holding four shots. With his last bowl Miller came in to sit between Ball's bowls and the jack to win that game. Due to the two-life system, Miller and Ball played each other two more times and Ball won both these games to win the eight-years-and-under men's championship.

There was enthusiastic support for the championship from club members and their families who enjoyed watching the close games and good play by all competing.

Last Saturday and Sunday the Poverty Bay Bowling Club held the club's open singles championships. These were played in the heat, in good spirits with some very skilful draw bowls.

In the men's section Don Williams came to the final with two lives intact. After a win against Lex Kennedy he faced Steve Berezowski, winning 21-13.

In the women's section semifinal Lesley Seymour defeated Joy Davis 16-15 and moved through to the final against Ngawai Turipa, where the final six ends saw a change in the balance resulting in a win to Lesley Seymour 21-19.
