Poverty Bay

DAMAGE caused by Cyclone Gabrielle to Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s artificial turf caused the club to hold its progressive triples tournament at the Kahutia club last Wednesday.

In the Beetham Progressive Triples Tournament, each player was assigned the position of skip, director or lead, based on experience and ability. They were given their own card indicating which rink they would play on and who their skip would be for each of the three games.

Two points were awarded for a win and one point for a draw. In the event of a tie, positions were decided by ends won and, if teams were still equal, by shots won.

The winning lead was Joy McFarlane with five points. Four leads had four points. Three of them  won 12 ends. Otto Louw was placed second with 28 shots.  Anna Colvin and Jean Patterson were third equal, with 26 shots each.

Diane Christie was the only player in the tournament to win all three games. With six points, she was the first-placed director. Six directors got four points.

Placed second, with 15 ends, was Bruce Gledhill, third with 14 ends was John Kora and fourth with 13 ends was Mike Namana. Another player also won 14 ends but Namana, with 39 shots, gained the placing.

Three skips got five points. Sharon Olsen, with 15 ends, was first. Dave Hooper was second with 13 ends and 30 shots, Murray Owen was third with 13 ends and 22 shots and Barrie Denham was fourth with 12 ends.

A good turnout of 36 players represented the three city clubs and the rural clubs. The weather was kind, considering rain was forecast.

Poverty Bay members appreciate the support of other bowling clubs while they are without their own greens and in negotiations with an insurance company regarding the greens’ replacement.

Tournament controller Norma Miller presented the prizes on behalf of sponsor Beetham Lifestyle Village.
