Poverty Bay Bowling Club members held their annual Rex Rigney Christmas Mixed Triples Tournament last Thursday, and followed it with Christmas dinner.

Teams played three one-hour games.

The winners — Dave Hooper (skip), Steve Berezowski (director) and John Andrews (lead) — were the only team with three wins.

Jane Smith, sales adviser for the sponsor, Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village, presented Hooper with the Rex Rigney Rose Bowl Trophy. Unfortunately, the other members of his team were unable to stay for the prize-giving.

Second, with two wins and a draw, were Kathy Carroll (s), Ngawai Turipa (d) and Dusty Miller (l).

Five teams had two wins. The top two of these both won 14 ends so third place was decided on points differential. A team of just two players, Bruce Ball (s) and Tony Dobson, took third place by one point.

Bruce Smart played in the tournament and at the prize-giving the club acknowledged his 98th birthday, which is coming up this month.

Gisborne Bowling Club's annual Christmas tournament drew 48 players.

A brisk wind provided players with a good excuse for their wayward bowls, and some out-of-town players joined in the fun of the last official day of bowls for 2021.

First, with three wins and a plus-16 differential, were Bob Morley, Reg Hart and Emily Hongara (skip).

Second, with three wins and a plus-15 differential, were Sean Goldsbury, Tony Barton and Robin Jefferson (skip).

Third, with two wins and a plus-16 differential, were Libby Clay, Hugh Mackenzie and Steve Goldsbury (skip).

Club president Tim Sherriff congratulated the senior men's team, who won the centre interclub tournament the previous weekend. He made special mention of a stunning shot by Mal Trowell in the fours which won the game and the contest.

The Gisborne club team now have the opportunity to compete in the National Inter-club Sevens in Wellington in April.
